Your stay in New Zealand is nearing its end. What are the steps you have to take to ensure things go as smoothly as possible?
- Discuss with your landlord and sort out all of your dues.
- Students should contact their host institution and get a transcript of records.
- Talk to your New Zealand employer or academic adviser and see if they would be willing to give you a reference.
- Ask for some of your belongings to be shipped via mail post or through a moving company.
- Check the validity of your passport and ID card.
- Reserve your airline ticket ahead of time.
- Close all of your New Zealand bank accounts and end your obligations with any financial institution.

If your leave is scheduled in the middle of the fiscal year, you should contact the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) and ask to file your final tax return ahead of time. Depending on how long your stay in New Zealand has been, you may be considered a non-resident (less than 6 months) or a resident (more than 6 months). The procedures are different in each case, so make sure you ask for the right forms. You should also forward your contact details to the IRD so that they can contact you overseas, in case any issues arise.
Last but not least, don’t forget to say goodbye to all the friends you have made during your stay. Organising a small party is a nice way of saying thank you.
