The government of Jordan has taken a strong stance on the subject of education and as a result education in the country has reached to new heights of development. A new Higher Education Law has established The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and all universities and colleges come under this ministry. Students wishing to get higher education can either apply to public community colleges and universities or private ones. The private universities are entitled to award Bachelor’s degrees while public universities can award Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degrees.
There are also a large number of small institutes offering specialized short duration courses. Courses at such institutes can be tailored to individual needs and usually take admissions several times a year. Currently Arabic language courses are a major draw as students from European and American countries are taking admissions in all kinds of institutions to learn the language. Part of this attraction is due to the relatively safe and peaceful environment of Jordan, no language barrier as most Jordanians speak English, and the relatively low tuition fees. The cheap tuition fees also mean there is plenty of money left over to take part in the abundant night life Amman has to offer.
Specialized study abroad programs are available that not only train in Arabic language but also include cultural activities and excursions. These programs include area study courses about political and cultural matters in English, interaction with local students to improve language skills and visits to archaeological sites like the Dead Sea, biblical sites, Petra etc.
Some study abroad programs also open volunteering opportunities. Some options include helping locals with their English language skills, or volunteer to work in women’s rights organization, NGOs and for-profit organizations.
