When the thirty year terrorist war ended in 2009, Sri Lankan economy started to expand rapidly.  Tourism is growing in leaps and bounds while the infrastructure & urban development is moving at an accelerated pace. Every segment of industry is looking for employees at all levels. Employment is possible in a variety of fields including Textiles, Teaching, Medicine, finance and Information Technologies.

The structure of the different organizations varies and depends on where you are working. There is everything from family-owned autocracies to business with Silicon Valley type environments. So before signing a contract, it is necessary to explore and see exactly what you are getting into.

Majority of the expatriate jobs are situated in Colombo as most of the larger businesses are located here. The salaries in Sri Lanka are naturally not as good as those in the more developed countries. However, costs of living are also significantly lower and the up side is that expatriates are still paid more than others around them. Majority of the expatriate packages include housing, car allowance and yearly tickets home.  Even with lower salaries it is possible to enjoy a reasonably comfortable lifestyle.

For the dependants of expatriate employees in Sri Lanka there are international schools with foreign qualified teachers, clubs, plenty of modern shopping venues, restaurants and nightlife. Obviously imported goods and entertainment locations are more expensive than local ones.

Seasonal or casual work is possible in tourist related locations. However it should be noted that the wages for such work are really low and may not be worthwhile for people used to western standards.
