Mozambique is a large Southeaster country, 801,590 sq. km. The country is slightly smaller than twice the size of California and shares borders with Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and South Africa. The capital is Maputo and Mozambique’s population is estimated to be 20 million.

Mozambique: Climate and Landscape

The terrain in Mozambique is mainly flat with highlands in the north. The climate is tropical with two seasons, a wet season from October to March and a dry season from April to September. The weather along the coast is always warm even during the rainy season. Rainfall varies from region to region with the coast approximately 900mm and the highlands 2000mm.

Places to Visit in Mozambique

Mozambique has a wide variety of very beautiful sites to visit along both the coast and inland. Gorongosa national park is popular destination for visitors from abroad as well as neighbouring Zimbabwe. Gorongosa is one of over ten national parks and reserves in the country. Among the animals that live in the parks are Lions, Rhinos, Elephants, Antelopes, among many others. Along the coast in addition to diving by the reef, visitors can get to see many more species in the ocean reserve.

Mozambique: People and Language

The official language in Mozambique is Portuguese spoken by about 50% of the population. There are also many local dialects in use including a dialect of Swahili, Makonde and XiTswa. The country is composed of Africans, Europeans, Euro Africans and Indians.

Other Facts from Mozambique

Mozambique is flood prone due to the terrain, in 2001 flooding forced 70,000 people to feel their homes and displaced over 400,000 people. Mozambique has sites with some of the oldest rock paintings some dating 8,000 years old. The Mozambique Island is a world heritage site and the Bazarut archipelago is the location of the largest Indian Ocean marine reserve. The country has a very rich coral reef that is home to over 1000 fish species. The country’s economic mainstay is agriculture and it exports a wide variety of produce including cotton, cashew nuts, prawns, sugar and aluminium.
