Venezuela is one of the most urbanized countries in South America, with most of its 29 million people living in cities. Caracas, is not only the largest Venezuelan city, but it is also the country’s capital. Other large cities include Maracaibo, Maracay, and Valencia. Venezuela is a federal presidential republic, made up of 23 states, the Federal Dependencies and the Capital District, which includes Caracas.

Venezuela is world renowned for its oil and petroleum resources and much of the country’s economy is sustained through the export of these commodities. Other major exports include steel, cement, and aluminium. The country currency is the bolivar fuerte (VEF), which was adopted in 2008.

Although the country is located in a tropical area, the climate varies throughout Venezuela. The plains feature a more humid climate, while the highlands have an average annual temperature of 8°C. Venezuela is home to part of the Amazonian Jungle and the Orinoco Delta.  The country also has one of the most unique biodiversities in the world.

Though Venezuela is infamous for being one of the most corrupt countries in the world, the Government, has made notable progress over the past decade, especially in areas such as poverty, education, and health.

The country’s official language is Venezuelan Spanish, which is a Castilian dialect; however, there also are over thirty recognized indigenous languages. English is the most common foreign language, and it is spoken by professionals, academics, as well as a part of the middle and upper-class population.
