Nowadays, Comoros is a developing nation and still have a lot to offer. These Islands are well located in the Indian Ocean. They were part of the sea trade route frequented by Indonesians, Africans, Arabians and Europeans. These influences have impacted Comoros’ culture. You can see that from the traditional cuisine to the clothes, music and so much more.
Adjusting to the Comorian Lifestyle
Comorian are very friendly towards foreigners and are well-known for their positive attitude.

- Comoros is a Muslim country: wear decently and prefer modest loose clothes.
- Public intoxication is not tolerated.
- No traffic light or driving sign. So pay attention if you’re a pedestrian or if you’re driving.
- At the beach:
No topless. Foreigners are not expected to swim fully-dressed. Shorts and swimming shirt are more respectful for men. Women can wear their favorite bathing suit covered by a sarong or pareo.
Mind you, there’s no supervised swimming in Comoros. - If you want to take picture it’s best to ask a local first before taking it.

Food to try:
The traditional cuisine reflects multiple influences (Indian & African mostly). Exotic spices, ginger, chili pepper, coconut milk: you can find all these ingredients in daily dishes.
- Exotic fruits: coconut, papaya, guava, mango, litchi.
- Fancy entrées: samboussa, catles, badjïa.
- Main dishes: pilaou (fried rice), mkatcha foutcha (cooked with coconut milk), mardouf, madaba (cassana leaves cooked with coconut milk).
- Desserts: mkatcha siniya (cake rice cooked with coconut milk), mkatcha goudougou (cake rice), caïmate.
- Dipping sauces: poutou (chili pepper paste), anchar, rougaï.
- Beverages: regular tchaï (spiced tea with ginger) and milk tchaï.
At home:
TV: there are less than five national & local TV channels, in Comoros Islands. You can also subscribe to a Canal+ TV package (French TV provider available in Comoros) for one month or more if you want. If you do so, you will have access to international TV channels.
Local news: you can listen to local radios (no digital services) & read local newspapers: Albalad or Alwatwan.

If you’re outside the country and want to reach someone in Comoros: dial +269 first or 00269. If you’re already in Comoros and want to reach someone there dial 77… or 33 first… Phone numbers in Comoros are only composed by 7 numbers. Buying a prepaid cell phone is highly recommended as one could hardly find a monthly mobile subscription. Phone calls in Comoros are expensive.
Most of public utilities, stores and equipments are located in the capital. So if you plan to stay outside of Moroni you must be well-prepared. At rush hour, Moroni can be very crowded. On the other hand roads & villages in Comoros present less traffic. There is no bike path in Comoros.
