Anguilla is an overseas territory belonging to the UK, situated in the Caribbean Sea, east of Puerto Rico and north of Saint Martin. The region comprises one larger island, Anguilla, and several small islets and cays. Only the island of Anguilla is permanently populated, by approximately 13,600 people. The capital and largest city is The Valley. Other large cities include, in order: Stoney Ground, The Farrington, and George Hill.

Although it is an overseas territory, Anguilla is self-governed and the head of government is represented by the Chief Minister. However, the UK retains its responsibility on military defence.

The main industries in Anguilla are offshore banking and incorporation, fishing, captive insurance, and tourism. The territory’s main exports are represented by alcoholic preps, electric furnaces, and motor vehicle parts and accessories. The local currency is the East Carribean dollar (XCD), although the US dollar (USD) is also accepted.

Anguilla features a tropical wet climate, but temperatures are moderated by trade winds. Although there are two seasons, temperatures vary little throughout the year. Hurricanes and tropical storms are not uncommon.

The only official language in the territory is English. There is also a local language called English Creole, which is also widely spoken. In addition, varieties of Chinese and Spanish are spoken by large groups of people living on the island. The national sport is boat racing, but cricket and rugby union are also popular amongst the locals.
