Studying in South Sudan

Home » Blog » Studying in South Sudan

June 5, 2013 //  by theinternationalwanderer//  Leave a Comment

The age, resources and struggle behind the liberation Southern Sudan all make the country a suitable place to study.

Surprisingly, for such a young nation six public universities in the country catering for the local population that can facilitate studying abroad. The institutions include the University of Juba, Rumbek University, Upper Nile University, and University of Bahr El Ghazar in Wau and University of Northern Bahr El Ghazal in Aweil. Despite the abundance of institutions following the split of the country, intake in many of the institutions fell drastically possibly due to reduced funds. However, these can facilitate study abroad in the country for students interested in research.

Apart from the above public institutions, the Catholic University of South Sudan is a private institution that students can use for study abroad programs in the country. The institution has its main campus in Juba and another in the town of Wau almost 650 km from Juba. The institution was founded in 2008. Due to poor infrastructure, many institutions do not have working websites but further information can be accessed for the country’s foreign missions and embassies.

Given the great development gap in South Sudan, many international organizations are working day and night in the country to help uplift living standards. Through these organizations, students can access internships that can facilitate study in South Sudan. The African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF) accepts interns to assist with the major hurdles of research and operation in South Sudan. For education students, organizations such as Project education South Sudan have taken a leading role in the country and offer internships that involve participants in girl’s leadership development, data compilation, statistical research, fundraising and event planning among other activities.
