Malawi is located in Southern Africa just east of Zambia. The country is 118, 480 sq km and is slightly smaller than Pennsylvania. The country is elongated in shape and shares borders with Tanzania, Zambia, and Mozambique. The capital city is Lilongwe and the national population is just over 13 million.

Malawian climate is sub- tropical with a rainy season running from November to May and a dry season from April to October. Lake Malawi, 580 km long is by far the most prominent physical feature in this country. The country is mainly a plateau with a few rolling hills and small mountains.

The country remains among the least developed globally with as much as 90% of the population living in rural areas.
