Moldova is a landlocked country situated between Romania and Ukraine. With a terrain consisting of hilly plains and deep valleys, it is made up of numerous rivers, streams and minor lakes. It is an exceptionally fertile region due to the black soil covering 75% of the nation.

The Dniester is its longest river with the country’s lowest point situated along it. It runs along the country’s East coast. The Prut, a tributary of the Danube, is the second largest river in the country.

The capital city of Chisinau is located on the banks of River Byk. The city has a number of parks including the Rose Valley, Parcul Dendrariu and the Botanical Garden. Visitors can also enjoy a visit to the Chisinau Museum of History, or spend a day at the beaches surrounding the Chisinau Lake.

Other cities of interest include Balti with its historical points and Cahul with many thermal spas. Bender is known for its seventeenth century fortress while Tiraspol offers several museums. Clothes made in vibrant colours, woodcarvings, enamel paintings and handmade carpets are some of the country’s specialities.

Moldova has long summers which bring moderate westerly winds and average temperatures of 20° C (68° F). Winters bring cold northerly winds with average temperature of -4° C (24° F) in January. Average yearly rainfall is 58 cm (22.8 in).
