Placed in the middle of the Balkan Peninsula in south east Europe, Serbia is a land of many formations. Spiky Balkan Mountains make up the natural boundaries with Bulgariaand Romania; rugged Dinaric Alps lie to the west, while the fertile Pannonian floodplain extends from the capital city, Belgrade to north borders of Croatia and Hungary.Other bordering countries include Macedonia, Albania and Monenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The most precious treasures of Serbia are found in its rural countryside. Tara Canyon, Europe deepest canyon provides some of the most testing white water rafting. Kopaonik is the primary ski resort. The country offers over 150 unexplored caves and in excess of 300 geothermal springs. Seventeen Roman emperors were born on this country’s soil, and they all left palaces and monuments as reminders to coming generations.

Serbia enjoys two noticeable climates. Northern areas experience cold winters with hot, humid summers. The southern portion of the country has weather that more closely resembles the Mediterranean climate. The north part gets more rain and snow than the southern part of the country with the inland areas getting three times more rain than coastal regions. The rain is fairly evenly distributed through the year.

Restaurants in Serbia are generally cheaper than their complementing Western European eateries. Rakija, a fruit flavoured spirit is the country’s favourite drink. Serbian cooking utilizes grilled meats, sausage, and locally produced cheeses. Main fast foods include stuffed breads called burek and plieskavica burgers served with a special sauce.
