The monastery of San Antonio El Real in Segovia, Spain

San Antonio El Real is the best kept secret in Segovia. Founded by 1455 by King Enrique IV (Henry IV) of Castile, these gorgeous cloisters are still home to incredible 500-year-old artwork, including unbelievably beautiful ceilings.

Further Details

Location: Near the corner of Av. Padre Claret and Calle Coronel Rexach, about 100 meters down the quiet Calle San Antonio El Real: Google Maps

One of the best ways to get to the monastery by foot is to start at the plaza below the aqueduct and then follow the old Roman structure to the southeast, up a long slope of shallow stairs (not the steep stairs to the northwest). Walk along the aqueduct for about ten or fifteen minutes (less if you walk briskly) until you reach the point where it goes underground. This is marked by a placard. On the opposite street corner, you will see a few flags and the letters SAR painted on a wall. Head in that direction and follow the arrows with the phrase, Abierto al turismo.

How to book

Discovering San Antonio El Real is almost like walking into a fairy tale. Once inside the monastery, you have to find the closed door framed by red curtains and ring the bell. Your guide will appear. She is incredibly devout, but charmingly so, and her enthusiasm is part of the experience. She only speaks Spanish, but even if you don't, you can still see this beautiful place. The guide is very, very nice.

Mornings: Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00AM – 2:00PM
Afternoons: Tuesday through Sunday, 4:00PM – 9:00PM (try to arrive before 8:00PM)
The hours can sometimes change due to religious observances, so I recommend calling ahead: (+34) 622 484 300 or (+34) 921 420 228.

Cost: 2 euros per person
