The major institute of formal learning is a university located on the island. It operates under the inspirations of the Dutch and American educational approaches. Other institutes on the island include offshore medical schools, academies for music, fine art, teaching, training for nurses, and language schools.
The four year medical program on the island is similar to programs offered in the US and UK medical schools. The basic training is obtained on the island and Clinical Rotation in the US or UK is possible. The programs are acknowledged by the World Health Organization, Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, USA, and General Medical Council U.K. Entry into the program requires a High School Graduation in good standing with a background in sciences. An entrance examination can also be taken for entrance into the program.
For short term studies, a course in Comparative and International Law is possible. The course offers a view of the American legal system in comparison with international setting. The three week course prepares students to practice law in world economy and deal with international legal issues that come up in practices and theory. Students are exposed to foreign legal institutes with influence from African, Caribbean and European influences. The program is run in collaboration with American and Dutch Universities and is approved by the American Bar Association.
Citizens of numerous European Union countries, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, United States and Canada do not need a visa to enter Curacao for the first time. Students from all other countries will need a visa to be allowed entry. All students are required to get a student residency permit which is processed after entering the island. The students are provided with forms for residency after being accepted into a program of study.
