Global Health Service Learning in Costa Rica

Global Health Service Learning in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a beautiful country filled with tropical jungles and picture perfect beaches. Experience the vivid culture of Costa Rica while serving those in need.

Further Details

International Service Learning (ISL) offers various health teams to the region including medical, dental, nursing, global health, veterinary, and a hike for humanity through the culturally rich countryside! Volunteer teams range from 4-20 participants, and trips can also be uniquely customized to include time in either Panama or Nicaragua.

Costa Rica has a social security system that unfortunately is oversaturated and only covers public and private sector employees and self-employed people that contribute to the system. The unemployment rate is very high and we have a large population of poverty-stricken immigrants, mostly Nicaraguans. These are the communities where ISL volunteers serve. Costa Rica is a great first country to visit for those who have not been exposed to extreme poverty before.

Your team will be transported to a developing community to conduct in-home community health surveys to assess the need for health services. You will invite those in need of medical care to a field clinic staffed by local, licensed medical professionals. At the clinic, you will rotate through patient intake, triage, examination, diagnosis, and treatment, and pharmacy stations.

In the evening, you will participate in seminars on prevention and treatment of diseases common to the area and practice techniques such as suturing and administering injections. Your team will eat most dinners out in order to relax and experience the local culture and cuisine. You will learn a few traditional dances and explore some important historical/cultural sites.

Recreational opportunities vary by location, but you will have the opportunities to shop for local crafts and explore geographic treasures such as beaches, volcanoes, rainforests, or caves and explore ruins, city centers, or coffee plantations, and have time for activities such as ziplining or snorkelingi!

Global Health teams are also available in Belize, Colombia, the Dominican Republic/Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Tanzania, and India. Visit our website for more details!
