How to Stretch Your Spending Money When Traveling

So you’ve been saving your money for months, possibly years, for a dream vacation while you are busy taking your online doctor of education at the same time. Obviously, you want to be sure that the money you saved goes far and isn’t wasted. It seems it’s all too easy to arrive at your destination and make a whole bunch of impulse purchases those first few days, only to find you are already running low on money. In order to help you stretch your spending money as far as possible, we’ve put together a list of simple tips you can use.

carPay in Advance

One of the best ways to ensure you’ve got enough spending money is to pay for as much as possible in advance of your trip. This can include your accommodations, transportation, attraction tickets, concert/event tickets, meals, sightseeing tours, etc. By paying for it in advance you won’t have to worry about how much cash you need to keep aside while on vacation.

Set a Daily Budget

Since you have paid for most of your stuff in advance, it should be fairly easy to then set a daily budget. This may need to include meals, attractions/tours, and shopping. Once this budget has been set you want to be sure you stick to it.

If you’re the type that finds it hard to stick to a budget you could always take it a step further. Create an envelope for each day of your vacation and label it with the day of the week. Place that daily amount of cash in the envelope, and then seal it. Instead of carrying all your cash with you at once, you can just take that day’s allowance and leave the other envelopes in the safe in your room or at the hotel’s front desk.

Bring Snacks and Food

If you are heading out for a full day of activities and touring, it's a good idea to pack snacks in your bag. This can include granola bars, breakfast bars, dried fruit and nuts, and of course water. By bringing along your own snacks you'll be able to save on food expenses.

Use Public Transportation When Possible

Sure, it’s handy to hail a cab to get you from point A to point B or even rent a car, but these can be pretty expensive transportation options. If you are visiting a big city there is no reason that you can’t get around by public transit. This will save you quite a bit of money and in some cases, you will actually be able to get around faster.

Relax Knowing You’ve Got Enough Money

You've put in all the hard work of saving up for your dream vacation while earning your online EDD degree, so of course you want to make sure you stretch your money the best you can. With a little advanced planning and some discipline, you’ll be able to enjoy your vacation without having to worry about running out of money.
